Due to the great success of the first Audio for Picture Awards Festival, IAR held it’s second highly anticipated AFP Awards Festival on November 15th.
Students submitted television commercials, animated short films, video game trailers, movie trailers and movie scenes. It was a difficult task for the audio post-production faculty to choose the winners and outstanding achievements, as all of the submissions were excellent.
On March 9th IAR students gathered for the third AFP Festival, but this time with a twist. Submission finalists were judged and critiqued live at the festival by an IAR faculty panel which included Noel Smith (Dean of Faculty), Zack Goldberg (Audio-Post Instructor), and Bob Kirschner (Audio-Post Instructor). The students were extremely receptive to the compliments and critiques that the panel had to offer.

On the first of November, 2007, IAR held its Audio For Picture (AFP) Awards Festival, open to students in their last quarter at IAR, when they have the Audio Post Production class. Entrants selected a segment of video and took out the original audio. They then had to replace the audio with original work including music, sound FX, foley, and dialog. Participating students collaborated on projects, and worked as teams to add character voices and share ideas. Final submissions for the AFP Festival were judged, screened and awarded at the event. Pizza, popcorn, and beverages greeted the spectators as they entered the room. Every seat was filled and every bit of standing room was taken, with students and faculty spilling out into the hallway.
The projects were classified into three areas based on length: Short Format, Medium Format, and Long Format. The video segments the students chose were incredibly diverse and ranged from popular current movies such as 300 and Blood Diamond to unexpected movies such as Big Trouble in Little China and Kung Fu Hustle. Also used were the animated movie Street Fighter, a Sony Playstation television commercial and a parody of the A-Team television show with IAR instructors in the lead roles.
The entertaining event was a perfect ‘send-off’ to those students who had just graduated IAR the day prior. Staff member Nell Gwynn, who hosts the AFP events, announced the winners and remarked, “In the single year we’ve been hosting this event, the quality has skyrocketed.”

The Spring Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival was a great success. The festival showcased audio/video projects from four IAR class sections, the most of any festival. Students were required to take a pre-existing video of their choice and recreate all sound effects, dialog, musical scores, and foley. The projects were limited to three categories based on time length: Short Format, Medium Format, and Long Format. The larger number of applicants yielded a very diverse and creative field of projects such as commercials for SAAB, Coke, and Playstation to short films and movies like Billy’s Balloon, Talladega Nights, Final Fantasy, and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. One submission, Godzilla, amused the crowd with character dialog done by IAR faculty gibing each other. For the first time, students addressed the audience about their projects, answering questions about their creative and technical decisions. Matt Crawford, the creator of the AFP version of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, remarked, “It took about 30 hours of foley work alone, but the hardest part was doing Pee Wee’s voice. I actually had to pitch shift it to get it close.” This new element of the AFP awards format was extremely informative and exciting. A new award was introduced to the AFP, Judges Choice, which was given to the highest scoring project out of all three formats. Thank you to all students who submitted.

Students in their 4th quarter at IAR take: Post Production-Audio, which teaches them the techniques of creating an audio soundtrack synchronized to video. Subjects include location sound production, SMPTE time code, dialog, audio bed tracks and sound effects. Students are given the chance to enter the popular Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival, where they use the tools they learn in the class, choose a pre-existing video piece and recreate all aspects of the audio for it.
The AFP awards are an exciting and creative experience for students. “It’s a tremendous collection of art,” says Nell Gywnn from Student Services, who leads the AFP. Students chose from their favorite films, television shows, commercials, and cartoons. One project was a movie trailer and rather than using video from the original, the student re-created the trailer by piecing together different scenes within the film and adding unique voice-overs, music, and sound effects. An audience favorite was a spoof of the Matrix movie with an argument debating the pros and cons of digital recording vs. analog recording using improvised humorous dialog of characters during a fight scene. Thanks to all who submitted.

For more than two years now, IAR has presented its Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival to showcase student post production projects. AFP is not officially a part of the audio-post production course given in the last quarter, but it has become an important, exciting opportunity for using the tools students learn in the course. Students choose any pre-existing video piece and recreate all aspects of audio. The high level of competitiveness and ambition demonstrated by the student projects distinguished this Fall’s AFP Awards from previous events. Nell Gwynn, creator of the AFP, remarked, “Normally, we have short form projects, but this time virtually all submissions were two minutes or more. The top three prizes were hotly contested, and having missed the top three by only a half a point, the judges recognized Juan Rivera’s project as an audience favorite.” The range of projects included scenes from movies, TV shows and animated films, such as ‘300,’ ‘I Am Legend,’ ‘The Notebook,’ ‘The Chappelle Show,’ ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Shrek.’ Nell made the important point that “The AFP forces students to raise their standards and creativity, and gives them a final project or ‘demo reel’ to showcase their talents if they want to pursue audio-post as a career.”

On Tuesday, April 7th, IAR hosted its 2009 Spring Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival. In the fourth quarter of IAR’s program, students take a post production course. The course introduces students to the production of an audio soundtrack synchronized to video. Using the tools they learn in the classroom, students complete their own post production projects and can submit them to be judged in the AFP Awards Festival.
Students can choose any video segment they wish from which they delete all audio content. Then using the techniques they have learned at IAR and in the post production course, students recreate every aspect of soundtrack including dialog, sound FX, sound design, and music score. Faculty member Lyell Loyd is a Senior Staff Engineer at WABC-TV and the A1 show mixer (senior audio engineer) for “Live! with Regis and Kelly”. He brings his professional experiences into the classroom as he teaches the post production course. He remarks about this season’s projects, “There was more animation this time and they are impressive pieces. On the first day of class I tell them to start thinking about what they want to work on for their final project.” The diversity in tastes, styles, and projects was represented by selections that included Terminator, the animated film Warriors of the Wind, The Soloist, and Dawn of War. Thank you to every one who submitted!

On Tuesday, July 14th, IAR hosted its 2009 Summer Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival. In the fourth quarter of IAR’s program, students take an audio post-production course, one of the school’s most popular subjects and a growing industry filled with lots of job opportunities. They learn to synchronize audio to video. In the course, they then define and produce their own post-production projects from start to finish, and can submit them for recognition at IAR’s AFP Awards Festival.
Students choose any video piece they wish and then they delete all audio content. Using the techniques they have learned at IAR and in the post-production course, students recreate every aspect of audio including dialog, sound FX, sound design, and musical composition. IAR invited Wendell Hanes as one judge for AFP. He has scored over 600 commercials, themes, and promotional spots for television, and has authored the post-production book, “The 30-30 Career: Making 30 Grand in 30 Seconds!” Wendell critiqued every student project and shared his comments and advice with the audience, which included students, family and friends. “Sound design is all about the contrast between highs and lows,” he said. “The sound is intense during explosions and car crashes, but immediately low when switching to dialog. Use volume and reverb. Think about the environment the video is showing and build sounds that match. “Sometimes there will be audio that you do not see on screen. During the fight scene in the movie Gladiator, as the intensity of the fight builds, you have to intensify the sounds of the crowd, tigers, and background music.” This AFP’s projects included Fast and Furious, Wall-E, 300, Gladiator, War, Nine, Drop Dead Fred, Kung Fu Panda and many more.
Thank you to every one who submitted!
